Among others, the Acceleration
Prize, which recognizes scientists, has been awarded to Kenyan engineer Evans
Vadongo (also CNN Hero 2010) for creating the cheap solar powered lanterns. The lanterns, according to SDFA Kenya's program, help to improve education standards, reduce respiratory and eye
related diseases, reduce climate change as well as reduce poverty, in the poorest
rural communities in Kenya.
